• Exploring a hyper-arid Mars analog environment

Research Interests:

Research in Li’s group is mainly focused on the study of (bio)geochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur at various spatial and temporal scales, aiming to understand the geological and biological controls on the recycling of these volatile elements and their impact on Earth’s environment, climate, and resources. The main geochemical tools we use for our study are stable isotopes. Some ongoing research projects include:

  • Determination of N isotope fractionation factors using theoretical calculations and lab experiments
  • C and N recycling across subduction zones
  • C, N, S cycles and their role in controlling the habitability and sustainability in early-Earth and Mars analogue environments
